  • African-Americans covers history, heritage, emigration and issues. Offers a vast array of links to related genealogy and historical web sites. A must-visit site!
  • AfriGeneas Database is the definitive surname registry for those with African or African-American ancestry. You can also add your surname to their database.
  • Directory of Genealogists for Africa. A small list, but a good point of contact.
  • Hayes family history page and also the convener of the computer interest group for the Genealogical Society of South Africa.
  • Medical history and genealogy. The university studies Molly Hanley who traced her ancestry back to South Africa in 1688 and they have proved a vital link in a gene defect in many South Africans.

  • Public Record Office (PRO) is your primary source for birth, marriage, death and adoption records. This resource is full of addresses, phone numbers, how-to's and basic info for England, Wales and the U.K.
  • Surnames Now has links to over 125 surname searchable online databases covering Europe, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
  • UK and Ireland Home Page has info for those researching England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and other islands.

France

  • Beauregard's Genealogy Page is an excellent place to start on your French/France ancestry. The abundance of information is available in both English and French. Thank you Denis for sharing this information with us!
  • Le Centre Genealogique des Pyrenees Atlantiques (CGPA): With some English at this site, it concentrates of Rance genealogy, links to archives, the latest news on conferences and records available but specifically concentrates on Bearn and Pays Basque regions.
  • Le Cercle d'Études Généalogiques et Héraldiques de L'Ile-de-France is a french language web site. It does offer valuable information for all those researching their french roots and family history.
  • Patronymes or "Surnames." This French site has more than 480 families listed. They aren't all french names and include European, Scottish and British names that can also be found in North America.

  • Geneanet is a database web site that indexes all genealogical resources all over the world including surname searches.

  • Family Museum is a collection of family history notes on 360 different family names and 835 individuals. Covers England, Quebec, France, Germany, Ulster, New England and New York.

  • Hall of Names International gives the origin of surnames. Most genealogists know to take it with a grain of salt because this type of generic research cannot be true for all members of any given surname, but it is worth a try if you're stuck.
