| Val Laferrière with husband
Dany, and daughter Liberty. |
In search of her own heritage, Val Laferrière became well-acquainted
with the importance of the oral tradition. She never knew her grandmother
and with very little information she began some research. While she uncovered
vital statistics and other facts she felt she was missing the spirit of
this woman. What she was missing were the things that only her grandmother
herself could tell.
Already equipped with a writing background and a Bachelor of Arts degree,
she formed Legends & Legacies, aptly named after a chapter on her
grandmother. Since 1994 she has preserved family histories, biographies
and lore of others across North America. A combination of creativity and
computer skills make each of her books a family treasure.
In addition to family history, Val takes on freelance assignments and
has written for the 1994 Victoria Commonwealth Games, the 1999 Winnipeg
Pan American Games, the Department of National Defence and an assortment
of publications. She speaks to groups on oral history, genealogy and heritage
and teaches a family history workshop encouraging do-it-yourselfers to
preserve their memoirs.
Val, her husband Dany and their daughters Liberty and Lucie currently reside in
Halifax Nova Scotia.
